It was less than two weeks since my boyfriend returned to his college town six and a half hours away. Personal notifications flooded my iPhone as I slid to unlock his corny Instagram posts and sincere messages. As part of my daily routine, I checked all my notifications and proceeded to investigate my boyfriendââ¬â¢s recent followers, likes, and tagged pictures. There, I found that a new girl from Michigan had followed him and in return he liked all her pictures. Immediately I turned green. After 35 minutes of cyberstalking, I was 87 weeks into this strangerââ¬â¢s Instagram feed and concluded that she was an immediate threat to my long-distance relationship. Social media allowed my boyfriend to connect with stranger hundreds of miles away. It was this thought that led me to believe that social media is just a pathway to infidelity. Social media and social networking sites are undoubtedly a large part of youthââ¬â¢s lives, and growing rapidly throughout generations and cultures. Between the significant number of Facebook users and millions of Instagrammers, itââ¬â¢s reasonable to conclude that these technological advances play a role in shaping my generation and future generationââ¬â¢s lives. Whether itââ¬â¢s decreasing quality time, creating a faà §ade of our lives, or, enticing potential danger-social media gets a bad rap.
